Mechanics & Structures Laboratory

Mechanics & Structures Laboratory

The Mechanics and Structures Laboratory is designed to provide students with practical experience in the fundamental principles of Engineering Mechanics, Mechanics of Solids, and Structural Analysis. Students verify theoretical principles through carefully designed experiments and observe actual structural behaviour under loading conditions.

Equipment Available

  • Reaction of Beam Apparatus (Simply Supported)
  • Column Buckling Apparatus
  • Screw Jack Apparatus
  • Combined Bending and Torsion Apparatus
  • Deflection of Beams Apparatus
  • Stresses in a Curved Bar Apparatus
  • Two-Hinged Arch Apparatus
  • Three-Hinged Arch Apparatus
  • Pin-Jointed Truss Apparatus
  • Continuous Beam Apparatus
  • Moment of Inertia Apparatus
  • Torsion Testing Machine
  • Fatigue Testing Machine (Simple)
  • Verification of Castigliano’s Theorem Apparatus
  • Structural Analysis Frame Model

Learning Objectives

  • Verify the principles of equilibrium and reactions in simply supported beams
  • Determine the relationship between load, deflection and bending moment
  • Study the behaviour of columns under buckling loads (Euler’s theory)
  • Analyse torsional stresses and angle of twist in circular shafts
  • Experimentally verify the Muller-Breslau principle and influence lines
  • Test forces in pin-jointed trusses and compare with analytical results
  • Study behaviour of two and three-hinged arches under various loadings
  • Determine structural behaviour of continuous beams and frames
